SHREVEPORT, La. – One might expect for a team to be a little rusty after not having played in 19 days but the LSU Shreveport women's basketball team shook the cob webs off early as they cruised to a 67-53 win over the Jarvis Christian Bulldogs in Red River Athletic Conference action at The Dock on Friday night. LSUS improves to 8-6 overall and 4-0 in the RRAC while Jarvis falls to 1-6 and 0-4 in the standings.
"For us to be on break for so long we came out in the first half and really played well," said LSUS Head Coach Curtis Loyd as his Pilots outscored Jarvis 18-4 in the first quarter. "We had a good week of practice but I knew the game rust would still be there."
That rust showed a little bit in the second quarter as Jarvis outscored the Pilots 12-9. "It caught up with us a little bit in the second quarter which made me go a bit deeper into the bench but overall I was really pleased with our effort," said Loyd who played a total of 10 players and all who played more than four minutes scored.
LSUS led by as much 24 points in the third quarter of action but Jarvis battled their way back into the contest to make the scoreboard a little more respectable as they outscored the Pilots 20-16 in the final quarter.
Courtney Randle (SR/Lamarque, Texas) led the Pilots with 20 points and tied with Chaterra Cage (SR/Port Arthur, Texas) with a team leading nine rebounds. Johnesha Major (SR/DeSoto, Texas) was the only other Pilot to add double figures as she finished with 10 points. Quiana Tucker (SR/Stone Mountain, Georgia) and Bria Freeland (SR/Austin, Texas) each added eight points while Kourtney Pennywell (SR/Shreveport, Louisiana) pulled down seven rebounds and tossed in six points.
Johnesha Major and Freeland dished out plenty of swift passes as they each had four assists while Courtney Randle had three. "I thought we did a great job sharing the basketball," said Loyd. "Pennywell and Major played big minutes in the stretch part of the game where they were trying to make a run. But I want to give credit to Jarvis for coming in and playing tough."
The Pilots will not have long to enjoy this win as the Wiley Wildcats come to town tomorrow for a 5:30 p.m. tip at The Dock.
