Magnolia, Ark. – The 13-ranked LSU Shreveport Pilots made the trip to Magnolia, Arkansas to take on the Southern Arkansas Muleriders. In a high scoring, back and forth game, the Muleriders came out on top by a final score of 16-8. The Pilots are now 15-5 and Southern Arkansas improved to 12-5.
"We failed to compete on the mound as well as we needed to," said LSUS coach Brent Lavallee. The Pilots pitchers walked a total of 14 batters and gave up 17 hits. "We were trying to be way too fine and a result of that was too many walks."
The offense did a great job keeping the Pilots in the game as they scored eight runs on eight hits. "I thought our offense did a great job putting the pressure on for the entire game," said Coach Lavallee. "The score does not reflect how the game was played at all."
Main contributors offensively for the Pilots were Layton Laird (JR/Baton Rouge, Louisiana) who went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs batted in and Kevin VanAsselberg (JR/Alexandria, Louisiana) who also had a double.
"We look forward to getting back to work and righting the ship for conference play this weekend," said Lavallee. "I am very confident that this loss will make us a better team."
