SHREVEPORT, La. – The LSU Shreveport Pilots crushed the visiting Huston-Tillotson Rams 22-6 in the series finale to take the series two games to one. The Pilots improve to 20-8 overall and 7-2 in the Red River Athletic Conference while the Rams slide to 6-10 and 3-5 in the league.
"Our guys got here this morning and had a pretty good attitude about themselves," LSUS coach Brent Lavallee said after yesterday's 13-10 loss. "We were excited to get back to work and you definitely could see that excited payoff during the game today."
The Pilots had the game under control by the end of the third inning with a 13-2 advantage. Beaux Guilbeau (SO/Carthage, Texas) had a two-run double in the first inning as the Pilots took advantage of the HTU starter Jacob Hubbard (1-2) who walked five and hit two Pilot hitters.
LSUS put an exclamation point on the game with nine runs in the bottom of the 4th inning with four hits while HTU committed two errors in the field. Ryan Pouwells (JR/Surrey, British Columbia), Vaughn Shapen (SR/Shreveport, Louisiana) and Layton Laird (JR/Baton Rouge, Louisiana) all drove in runs with singles in the big inning for the home squad.
Landon Lewis (JR/Bossier City, Louisiana) (3-0) picked up the win for the Pilots as he worked four solid innings in a walk free performance with two strikeouts. The Pilots bullpen combined for the final three innings with Cade Gibson (FR/Ruston, Louisiana), Jacob Krews (FR/Keithville, Louisiana) and Jacob Mitchell (FR/Center, Texas) each working an inning.
Overall HTU pitching today walked eight and hit four and the Pilots capitalized scoring 22 runs while belting 10 hits. They also took advantage of the miscues (7 errors) by the Rams' defense as 10 of their 22 runs today were unearned.
Pouwells led the Pilots at the plate going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. Caleb Lasseigne (SO/Breaux Bridge, Louisiana) also drove in a trio of Pilot base runners after going 1-for-3, two of which came home on his triple in the 4th inning. Guilbeau was the only other Pilot that drove in three while Laird and Shapen each drove in two.
"Ryan is a confident hitter and hitting behind David Salgueiro (JR/Miami, Florida) he uses that patience to his advantage cause he's usually hitting with runners on and as he has a good base stealer ahead of him. Ryan is doing his job as good as you could ever ask and he has a good swing and a good approach," said Lavallee.
