Pilots Take Series Out From Under the Generals
Alexandria, Louisiana— In an action-packed doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, the Pilots of LSU Shreveport emerged victorious in both games against the Generals of LSU Alexandria, winning by scores of 4-1 and 6-5, respectively, to clinch the series 2-1. With stellar performances both on the mound and at the plate, the Pilots showcased their resilience and determination to come out on top. With the win the Pilots move to 13-2 on the season and 5-1 in conference play.
In the first game of the doubleheader, both teams started off strong, with two scoreless innings setting the stage for a competitive showdown. However, it was the Pilots who broke the deadlock in the top of the third inning, capitalizing on timely hitting to plate two runs. A single from Jose Sallorin followed by a walk from Diego Aragon set the stage for Josh Gibson, who delivered a clutch single to bring both runners home and give the Pilots a 2-0 lead.
The Pilots extended their lead in the top of the fifth inning, adding two more runs to their tally. Despite facing early outs, the Pilots capitalized on defensive miscues from the Generals to keep the inning alive, ultimately capitalizing on walks and stolen bases to push their advantage to 4-0. The Generals managed to scratch across a run in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Pilots' lead.
On the mound, Draven Zeigler got the start for the Pilots and delivered a solid performance, going four innings and allowing just one run while tallying two strikeouts. Alex Gonzalez provided strong relief pitching, pitching 2.1 innings and striking out four batters to help secure the victory.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Pilots and Generals once again engaged in a closely contested battle, with both teams exchanging blows throughout the game. The Pilots struck first, scoring a run in the top of the third inning, before adding two more runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 3-0. However, the Generals rallied in the bottom of the fourth, plating four runs to take a 4-3 lead.
Undeterred, the Pilots fought back, tying the game in the top of the fifth before reclaiming the lead with another run in the top of the sixth. The Generals managed to tie the game once again in the bottom of the sixth, setting the stage for a tense final inning. In the top of the ninth, the Pilots seized their opportunity, scoring a crucial run to take a 6-5 lead before shutting down the Generals in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.
At the plate, Ryan Davenport and Brandon Valdez led the way for the Pilots, each going 2-for-3 with multiple RBIs. Davenport contributed three RBIs and one run, while Valdez added two RBIs. Trevor Burkhart and Josh Gibson also had strong performances, each going 2-for-4 at the plate.
On the mound, Pilot pitching was dominant once again, compiling 10 strikeouts in total. David Hankins led the way with four strikeouts to earn the win, while Tanner Young picked up the save and tallied three strikeouts to seal the victory.
The Pilots will be back in action Friday March 1st as they take on the Eagles of Texas A&M Texarkana. First Pitch is set for 2:00pm CT from Texarkana, Texas.
