Pilots Sweep Opening Day Doubleheader Against Tabor College

SHREVEPORT, La. — LSU Shreveport opened the 2026 season with an Opening Day sweep of Tabor College on Thursday at Pilot Field, earning a 7–5 comeback victory in Game 1 before shutting out the Bluejays 6–0 in the nightcap.

Game 1: LSUS 7, Tabor 5

In the opener, the Pilots showcased their resilience, responding to multiple deficits with timely hitting and clutch performances throughout the lineup. After Tabor took an early lead, Bronson Neave tied the game with a solo home run in the fourth inning before LSU Shreveport erupted for three runs in the fifth to seize momentum.

Tabor briefly regained the lead in the sixth, but the Pilots answered immediately. Carlos Sanchez delivered the tying RBI single, and Nazir Mendez provided the go-ahead blow with a solo home run in the seventh. Spencer Sullivan capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the eighth as LSUS secured the 7–5 victory.

Sullivan drove in three runs, while Neave and Mendez each collected two RBIs. Sanchez and Landon Hunt recorded multi-hit performances as the Pilots totaled nine hits and drew eight walks.

On the mound, LSU Shreveport used five pitchers in the opener. Brock Lucas started the game and allowed one run over 3.1 innings. Cade Robin followed with 1.2 innings of one-run relief before David Hankins worked through the sixth. Joan Roman earned the win with 1.2 scoreless innings, and Calvin Shepherd closed the door with two shutout innings and five strikeouts to earn the save.

Tabor received a solid start from Wyatt Bauer, who allowed one run in four innings. Jorge Rijo and Braeden Manning combined for five innings of relief, with Manning charged with the loss, while Lee Souza finished the game out of the bullpen.

Game 2: LSUS 6, Tabor 0

The nightcap belonged to LSU Shreveport's pitching staff, which combined for a two-hit shutout to complete the Opening Day sweep.

Evan Gant earned the win in his first start of the season, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing one hit and striking out three. Camden Stephens followed with 4.2 hitless innings of relief, striking out three and limiting Tabor's offense. Robert Lastra and Hunter Nichols closed out the game, combining for 1.1 scoreless innings to preserve the shutout.

Offensively, Carlos Vega powered the Pilots with a three-RBI performance, including a solo home run in the third inning and a two-run single in the eighth. Sanchez added an RBI double, while Spencer Sullivan and Aiden McGinnis each recorded extra-base hits as LSU Shreveport scored six runs on six hits and drew six walks.

Tabor starter Brayden Berens allowed one run over three innings before Will Beckmann and Logan McGuire worked out of the bullpen. Jake Powell pitched the final inning for the Bluejays.

 

LSU Shreveport returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 27, when the Pilots host Centenary College in an exhibition matchup at Pilot Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
