ALEXANDRIA, La. -- LSU Shreveport overcame a five-point halftime deficit and held off LSU Alexandria down the stretch for a 98-90 victory Thursday night at The Fort. The Pilots improved to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in Red River Athletic Conference play, while LSU Alexandria dropped to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
LSU Shreveport found themselves trailing 51-46 at halftime and watched LSU Alexandria control the flow for most of the night, leading for nearly 20 minutes compared to the Pilots' 14 minutes. But when the game was on the line, Khi Wallace took over.
Wallace was absolutely dominant inside, finishing with 28 points and 16 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. The big man lived in the paint all night, grabbing crucial offensive boards and finishing with authority whenever LSU Shreveport needed a momentum shift. Hayden Brittingham complemented him perfectly with 23 points and 12 rebounds, providing the kind of reliable scoring that has become his trademark.
Emareyon McDonald provided the dagger shot with 1:22 remaining, drilling a three-pointer that gave LSU Shreveport the lead for good at 86-85. The junior guard finished with 22 points and showed the composure LSU Shreveport needs in those pressure moments.
For LSU Alexandria, Norman Beckford led the way with 21 points and seven rebounds, while EJ McQuillan also finished with 21 points, keeping the Generals within striking distance throughout the evening. TJ James controlled the glass with 12 rebounds but struggled to find his offensive rhythm, finishing with just eight points.
The numbers tell the story of a game that came down to execution. LSU Shreveport shot 52.3% from the field compared to LSU Alexandria's 49.3%, and while the Generals were impressive from three-point range at 41.9% (13-of-31), the Pilots made their free throws when it counted. LSU Shreveport grabbed 40 rebounds to LSU Alexandria's 33, including a crucial 16-10 advantage on the offensive glass that provided those extra chances when the game was tight.
The Pilots also took care of the ball with just 10 turnovers while forcing 14 from LSU Alexandria. That four-turnover difference might not seem huge, but in a game decided by eight points, those extra possessions were precious.
LSU Shreveport built their biggest lead late, going up by nine in the final minute, but LSU Alexandria kept fighting until the very end.
The Pilots now turn their attention to Saturday's matchup at Louisiana Christian University in Pineville. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM.
