SHREVEPORT, La. -- The LSU Shreveport women's basketball team delivered a wire-to-wire performance Thursday night at The Dock, defeating the University of the Southwest, 84–53, to remain unbeaten in Red River Athletic Conference play. The Pilots improved to 10–2 overall and 6–0 in conference action, while the Mustangs dropped to 4–8 on the season and 0–6 in league play.
LSUS seized control from the opening tip and never relinquished the lead, as reflected by zero ties or lead changes throughout the contest. The Pilots set the tone early with relentless defensive pressure and efficient shooting, jumping out to a 7–0 start behind Paula Gonzalez Herrero. That momentum carried through the first quarter as LSUS shot effectively from the floor and from beyond the arc, building a commanding 35–12 advantage after one.
The Pilots' offensive efficiency and ball movement were on full display throughout the night, finishing the game shooting 47.0 percent from the field while knocking down 14 three-pointers. LSUS consistently shared the ball, recording 24 assists on 31 made baskets, and used spacing and tempo to keep the Mustangs off balance. Selma Markisic and Sami Slusarek provided consistent perimeter scoring, while Gonzalez Herrero orchestrated the offense with precision.
Defensively, LSUS forced 19 Southwest turnovers and capitalized on those miscues, scoring 18 points off turnovers. The Pilots' pressure also fueled their transition game, as they outscored the Mustangs 19–6 in fastbreak points. That pace, combined with strong rebounding, allowed LSUS to control the flow of the game from start to finish.
The Pilots dominated the glass, holding a 48–36 rebounding advantage and generating 17 second-chance points. Amandine L'Etang anchored the interior with seven rebounds and four blocks, while LSUS also controlled the paint, outscoring Southwest 30–16 inside. Toni Coleman contributed across the stat sheet, helping ignite defensive stops that quickly turned into scoring opportunities.
LSUS continued to extend its lead in the second half, pushing the margin to as many as 39 points early in the fourth quarter. Even with the outcome well in hand, the Pilots maintained their intensity and depth, receiving 20 points from the bench and closing the night with consistent energy on both ends of the floor.
Markisic led all scorers with 19 points while adding four assists, three rebounds, and two steals. Gonzalez Herrero finished with 15 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and three steals, and Slusarek added 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Coleman recorded seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals, and L'Etang controlled the paint with seven rebounds and four blocks. For Southwest, Michaela Ray and Alliah Scallion scored 11 points apiece, with Ray also pulling down nine rebounds and dishing out four assists. Saniya Wilson added 10 points for the Mustangs.
The Pilots will be back in action on Sat., Dec. 20 when they return to The Dock to face UNT Dallas. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
