Pilots Battle Through Tough Competition on Day One of LSUA Tournament
ALEXANDRIA, La. -- LSU Shreveport women's tennis showed resilience and fight throughout Friday's LSU Alexandria Tournament, falling 5-2 to Lewis-Clark State before dropping a 4-0 decision to William Carey (Miss.).
In the opening match, the Pilots turned in a strong showing in singles play, highlighted by two key victories. Lidia Gomez controlled her match at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win, while Sara Sofia Sanchez Molano battled back at the top spot to earn a gritty three-set victory, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6.
LSU Shreveport remained competitive across the lineup, with multiple courts pushing into tight sets, but Lewis-Clark State capitalized on an early doubles sweep to secure the 5-2 team win.
In the second match of the day, the Pilots continued to compete with energy despite a 4-0 loss to William Carey in a match shortened by clinch rules.
Sara Sofia Sanchez Molano took on a tough matchup at No. 1 singles, while Lidia Gomez and Ana Julia De Paula Mandrot competed at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Lucia Lucas added another strong effort in the lineup, and Christalyn Ross battled at No. 5 singles, keeping points competitive throughout.
In doubles play, the pairings of Gomez and De Paula Mandrot, along with Sanchez Molano and Lucas, worked to establish early momentum for the Pilots. Though the results didn't fall their way, LSU Shreveport continued to compete point-by-point and gain valuable experience against strong competition.
With multiple players showing grit across both matches, LSU Shreveport will look to carry that momentum into its final match of the tournament, returning to the court Saturday, April 11 at 12 p.m. to face Louisiana Christian.
