Pilots Hold Off John Melvin, 11-6

SHREVEPORT, La. – LSU Shreveport used a five-run sixth inning and a strong performance at the plate to defeat John Melvin University, 11-6, on Tuesday afternoon at Pilot Field. The Pilots improved to 22-3 overall, while John Melvin fell to 12-8. 

LSUS collected 11 hits in the victory while John Melvin tallied 15 hits but stranded 10 runners on base. The Pilots opened the scoring in the first inning when Spencer Sullivan lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Quaterrion Walton, giving LSUS an early 1-0 lead. 

John Melvin answered with two runs in the second inning, but LSUS pulled even in the bottom half when Brett Justice delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. 

After the visitors regained the lead with two runs in the third, the Pilots continued to chip away offensively. LSUS regained momentum in the fifth inning when Carlos Sanchez delivered an RBI single and the Pilots added another run to move back in front.  The game turned in the sixth inning, when LSU Shreveport erupted for five runs to extend its lead. RBI hits from Dorien Jackson, Makana Olaso, and Bula White highlighted the rally as the Pilots pushed their advantage to 10-5.

LSUS added another run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Landon Hunt, providing insurance heading into the final innings. 

At the plate, Brett Justice led the Pilots with a 3-for-3 performance and two RBIs, while Landon Hunt and Carlos Sanchez each recorded two hits. Hunt also homered in the win, and Sullivan finished with two hits and an RBI. 

On the mound, the Pilots used a deep pitching staff to secure the win. Camden Stephens earned the victory with two innings of work, while Evan Gant, Joan Roman, Robert Lastra, Jack Savitch, and Rhys Francis all saw time on the mound for LSUS. 

LSU Shreveport will return to action on Friday, March 13, when the Pilots host Texas College for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at Pilot Field.
